4. ENTERING THE SYSTEMThe EDMS site address is http://edms.cern.ch. You can also access it from the CERN home page at http://user.web.cern.ch/user/cern.html, by following the link Engineering, then EDMS. The Site Page (see Figure 2) leads you to a choice of a scope (LHC Machine, Experiments, Global Database, CERN Divisions, Others) and allows you to access relevant information about EDMS services and tools. If you are new to EDMS you should first read the pages More Info about the EDMS Service. Figure 2 – EDMS Site page (URL: http://edms.cern.ch). Choosing the scope allows you to deal with a subset of the EDMS data that is most relevant to you. Each of the choices proposed in this page, except “Global Database” leads to a listing of projects. The list of projects displayed when selecting the scope “Experiments” is shown in Figure 3. Figure 3 – The list of projects in the scope “Experiments”. By choosing a project, you will access its own EDMS Home Page. Figure 4 shows the ATLAS EDMS Home page. Notice the Logo and the name of the Project. Figure 4 – ATLAS Experiment EDMS Database Home page for guests. Every Project’s Home Page that can be selected from (for instance) Figure 3, allows the same actions permitted here, only on a different set of documents. The links on the home page are described in Table 1. Table 1– Description of the Home Page links.
You can now log in with your user name or continue to browse the ATLAS EDMS Database as Guest. EDMS can be accessed without having a personal user account. However, the only activity permitted as a guest is the consultation of documents that are publicly available. Documents that require that a user is identified (other than guest) are not accessible to guest users. An EDMS account can be requested from the CERN Helpdesk, phone 78888, or via the e-mail address EDMS.support@cern.ch. If you chose Log into EDMS, the EDMS login page appears, as in Figure 5 . Figure 5 – EDMS login page. Once you are logged in, the system writes the full name corresponding to your system username (Figure 6). Figure 6 – EDMS ATLAS Home page with a user logged-in. You can now also change your personal settings (e.g. password) via the Settings link (Figure 6). The Global Database link on the EDMS site page (Figure 2) allows you to list all projects in CERN EDMS and search for data beyond the scope of a specific project. The Global Database Page is shown in Figure 7. From this page, the link “navigator” brings you to an extensive listing of EDMS projects. Figure 7 – EDMS Home page for the Global Database with a user logged-in. The most important links available on the Site Page and on Project specific pages are accessible via the Navigation Bar (Figure 8), available in the top-right corner of each page. Figure 8 – EDMS Navigation bar. This bar appears in all contexts. It includes several fields that make it possible to quickly find a context (Home, Navigator, EDMS Site), or launch an action (Search, Help, News, Login). As these links depend on the context, they are not present in the project selection pages of Figure 3 since the context is not yet set. Table 2 gives an overview of the Navigation bar links. Table 2 – Links of the Navigation Bar.
