What is CDD ? |
CDD is the acronym for CERN Drawings Directory.
It is a web application which manages engineering drawings made either at CERN or in an external company. The aim of CDD is not to only store an electronic print of the graphical drawing itself, but also to store a reference with key information related to the drawing.
Drawings following different numbering systems (how the drawing id is generated depending on the system) and different management rules can be handled by CDD. The only condition is that those particular functionalities are well defined.
Several drawing systems have been identified at CERN and therefore, they were considered when designing the application. The current version of CDD focuses on the following naming systems: EST (which is principally used for the LHC project), LEP, ST-EL, SPS, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, CNAO,CV-CE98, GS-SE and LHC-b. Other CERN systems can be easily integrated on demand.
Life cycle of a drawing |
First, designers create their drawings using one of the available CAD (Computer Aided Design) tools, which can be CATIA or AutoCad. Then, via CDD, the drawings information are entered in a database. This operation might be done either automatically from the CAD tool and CartWeb, or manually directly in CDD. |
|
Once the drawing exists in the database, it can be modified, controlled, approved, classified and consulted, according to the rules defined for each drawing system at CERN, using the CDD application. When a drawing is ready to be archived, it is automatically stamped and stored in HPGL format. Once the archival process is over, the drawing can be visualised but no longer modified. |
Life cycle scheme |
The archiving process may fail for some reasons. Here is a list of the possible archiving errors, the reason why they occurred and what to do in some cases. |
CAD Life cycle of a drawing |
The CAD life cycle allows to manage drawings in a consistent way between SmarTeam, CDD and EDMS. This new life cycle was introduced to release the CAD models in SmarTeam through the existing drawings release mechanism. It also solves one of the main issues of SmarTeam and CDD where there was no way of knowing the dependencies between drawings. The impacts where thus not taken into account. Note that this is still the case for drawings that are not managed in SmarTeam (i.e. Autocad drawings). The new life cycle was created in SmarTeam and EDMS, it is shown in the following diagram:
The "Ready for Archiving" and "Archived" statuses in EDMS are considered as internal (they are not mapped in SmarTeam). Once the drawing is correctly archived, depending on its QAC, it is automatically moved to the next status. This could be one of the following: "Released" if QAC < QAC A (less restricted than two controls + approval) , "Ready for approval" (not represented on the mapping image) if QAC= QAC A or "Released for info" (not represented either) if the drawing follows the Atlas rules. For further information on how to use the life cycle in SmarTeam see SmarTeam - Life Cycle. |
Standard operations of CDD |
Creation of a new drawing
It consists in the creation
of a brand new drawing and so its first version. User has to enter the drawing
information. Once the drawing has been created, a drawing number (also known as the drawing identifier) is
assigned to it and displayed. This is normally done through CartWeb for CATIA and AutoCAD drawings.
CDD Home Page --> NEW DRAWING
Upload of a drawing file
This is a way to send drawing files from your design office to CERN, in order to be archived.
Click the Upload link in the CDD Home Page.
CDD Home Page --> UPLOAD FILE
This is automatically done when a drawing is checked in CATIA/SmarTeam.
Creation of a new version of an existing drawing
When a new version of an existing drawing has been issued, this operation
creates a new instance in the database corresponding to the new version.
CDD Home Page --> NEW VERSION
After the introduction of the New Lifecycle in 2017, this is automatically done when a new revision is created in SmarTeam ("New Release" command).
Modification of an existing drawing - Drawing Update
This operation consists in the modification of some pieces of information associated
to the last version of a drawing, without having to create a new one. Some
modifications may not be allowed, depending on the kind of information to be
changed and the status of the version.
CDD Web Home Page --> DRAWING UPDATE
Deletion of a drawing version
This operation lets user delete the last version of a drawing or the drawing
itself. This is possible only in case the archival process has not already begun.
CDD Home Page --> ADVANCED OPERATIONS --> DELETE LAST VERSION
Drawing information retrieval
The aim of this operation is to allow user to obtain the whole information about any version of a drawing. Access to one particular drawing is performed using query criteria chosen by user.
If the complete drawing number is not known or if you need to search for a word in the drawing title, it is possible to use the "%" special character as shown in the following picture:
Drawing Control
This operation allows user to electronicaly sign the last version of a drawing, or a
whole set of drawings. This is possible considering control access given to user
and control rules that apply.
CDD Web Home Page --> QUALITY CONTROL
Drawing approval
After a drawing has been controlled and archived, it may go through an
approval process. Several approvers indicate via CDD Web if they accept
or reject it. The approval responsible for the group, according to the
received comments, decides at the end to accept or to reject the
drawing.
In the context of the New CAD Lifecycle introduced in 2017, the approval process is not synchronized with SmarTeam. It means that the result will not be pushed to SmarTeam.
CDD Home Page --> APPROVAL PROCESS
See approved drawings
Any user has the ability to consult the list of the approved drawings by group.
CDD Web Home Page --> APPROVED DRAWINGS
Drawing plotting
This operation is used in order to plot an archived version of a drawing.
CDD Web Home Page --> PLOT
Drawings classification
Different operations allow user to classify many drawings into folders.
Drawings can be grouped together and users can freely decide how to group drawings
and in what order. For instance, this functionality can be used to group drawings in order facilitate the plotting.
